A DISCOVERY ADVENTURE:
This is a fun party game for thinking Christians that will encourage them and build them up in the faith!

It is IDEAL for ...

How to keep score

We usually don’t recommend encouraging your groups to keep score as this tends to focus people more on the competition than on the ways in which the content can applied in the everyday lives of each participant. But we do realize that sometimes a competition can be motivational to get a group engaged when they would not otherwise be so interested. Toward that end we have designed some options for “keeping score.”

Scoring Option 1: Announce ahead of time how much time will be allocated for the “hunting” phase of the game. When the time for “hunting” is up, have each group present its answers to the entire class. All groups should present their answers to Question 1, and the entire class would vote on the best answer. The group with the most votes gets 3 points, the group with the second most votes gets 2 points. All groups that have an answer to that question get at least one point. Groups with no answer to that question get no points for that question. Then proceed in this same manner, one question at a time, through all other questions. At the end of all questions, the group with the most points wins.

If the group prefers secret written ballots, then provide them with pieces of paper to record their votes.

Note: The primary reason for this scoring exercise is not to determine a “winner,” but it is to foster active and engaged group discussions to help people better understand the content presented in this scavenger hunt.

Scoring Option 2: This scoring option is similar to, and proceeds like, scoring Option 1. And as each group shares their answer to each question, ask the group to also share their thoughts on how the insights in each question could be used in practical ways to encourage each other and build their faith. Then, instead of voting on the “best” answers to each question, people would vote on the most intriguing and practically useful personal application of the insights presented by each group.

Note: The primary reason for this scoring exercise is not to determine a “winner,” but it is to foster active and engaged group discussions to help people better understand the content presented in this scavenger hunt.

The Beginner Version

Instead of the full version of the scavenger hunt, you may prefer this “Beginner Version” to introduce your group to this activity. This “Beginner Version” is easier and takes less time to complete, which makes it ideal for parties (or classes or discussion groups) when time is limited to about an hour. It is easier because we tell you specifically what resources work best for each question (reducing potential frustration of a more complicated search) and the activity has been abbreviated to only the first seven questions from the full version of “the hunt.”

This is a scavenger hunt that uses the content on The “Hunt” Gameboard which is called the b4worldview Virtual Resource Space. (found at: b4worldview.com/resources/ )

Instructions: Divide your class into small groups of between 2 to 4 people in each small group. Then have each small group find the answers to the following questions. Then everyone gets together after the hunt to share and discuss their answers.

Facilitator Instructions

If you are the facilitator (or party host, or group moderator, or class teacher), you may find the following suggestions useful:
  1. If this is your first time hosting/facilitating this scavenger hunt, you probably want to plan on using the Beginner Version. This Beginner Version is easier and quicker than the full version.

  2. You might want to copy & paste the entire “Beginner Version” section of this Web page to a word processor program (such as Word or Pages or GoogleDocs), and then print as many copies as the number of participants you think you might have (plus one for you).

  3. Make sure to ask your participants to bring their laptops or mobile devices, and tell them that the device with the biggest screen will probably work best. Ear buds are recommended unless you have enough separate rooms for each group.

  4. You may want write on a white board, or poster board, or pass out on sheets of paper the URL for the game board, which is at: b4worldview.com/resources/ .

  5. Decide whether or not you are going to use one of the score keeping options. If you will be using secret ballots, you will need 7 times the number of participants ballots. For example, if you will have 10 participants, then you will need 7 X 10 = 70 ballots. Ballots can be small sheets of paper, maybe just 2” X 3” big.

  6. Divide the entire class into small groups of between 2 to 4 people in each group. If practical, it would be good if at least one large screen device (laptop) was in each group.

  7. Although the software works well on almost all browsers and devices, it seems to work best on computers with high resolutions monitors running Chrome or Safari (if those are options that participants have on their computers).

  8. Plan on 45-60 minutes for the “hunt” and another 15-30 minutes for the review and discussion time following the “hunt.” Much of the value and interest will be generated as each small group reviews their answers with the full class, and the other participants ask questions about how they arrived at those answers to the questions. Encourage discussion about different answers from different small groups.

  9. If you are using a scoring option, remember: The primary reason for the scoring exercise is not to determine a “winner,” but it is to foster active and engaged group discussions to help people better understand the content presented in this scavenger hunt.
