How to “Walk by the Spirit”
Lesson 11: Satisfying our Soul’s Need for BELONGING

Lastly, let’s look at how we get our soul’s need for BELONGING met. Our fallen nature tends to define good in terms of what people think is good. So, if we want to “fit in,” we need to do our very best to adopt the standards of others. We adopt their standards of dress, we conform to their standards of behavior, we talk like them, we try very hard to do everything they do (whether we really like it or not). In this way we work hard to “fit in” and that’s how we get our sense of belonging.

In contrast, let’s look at how we get our sense of belonging if we are walking by the Spirit. Just like for all the other needs of our soul, when we are walking by the Spirit, our soul’s needs get met entirely by God’s provisions. Our job is not to do anything to meet those needs, just accept God’s provision for them. We see that God will always do better for us than we can do for ourselves.

When we are walking by the Spirit, our view of “BELONGING” is the exact opposite of our flesh’s view. God has made each of us to perform a unique and important role (important to Him). No one else can do it. Only you can do it. He created you to do it. We are connected because we need each other to help. We are fitted together by the Holy Spirit to be the body of Christ. We minister to each other in unique and important ways and that gives us a sense of belonging. We don’t look like anybody else. Our sense of belonging comes from God, because He has made each of us different and essential, but we didn’t do anything to become that way.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Eph 2:10)

For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (Phil 2:13)

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household. (Eph 2:19)
