How to “Walk by the Spirit”
Lesson 9: Satisfying our Soul’s Need for HOPE

Now let’s look at how we satisfy our soul’s need for HOPE. What does our fallen nature do about getting hope? Hope, according to for our fallen nature, is wishing real hard that something will turn out the way we want it to turn out and then doing whatever we can do to make it happen. That is where our hope comes from. This is hope from our fallen nature.

As opposed to what?

Where does our hope come from when we are walking by the Spirit? When we are walking by the Spirit, our hope comes from the promises of God and the trustworthiness of God, right? God will absolutely keep His promises. They aren’t in question. It doesn’t matter how hard you hope, those promises are going to come true. They are going to come true even if you don’t know about them. They are going to come true. The promises that talk about what is going to happen in your future are absolutely solid and unquestioned. They are going to happen. It turns out if you know about them and trust God, then you can enjoy the rest and peace that comes from knowing those promises are going to happen. This is a type of hope that is certain, it is not an iffy hope based on how hard we can wish and work for the desired outcome.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. (Eph 1:13-14)

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. (Eph 1:18-19)
